Find Your Artistic Compass (Summary Notes)
Picture a huge piece of marble, all alone in the middle of a barren desert. Just this huge piece of marble, all alone, nothing around it. As you approach, you hear voices emanating from within the marble. You can’t even make out the words. They could be happy voices or they could be sad voices, you just don’t know.
But you have to find out. Because those words matter. That story, that expression, whatever is buried deep inside this massive fortress of marble in the middle of nowhere, whatever that is, it deserves to be heard. That is art. Any kind of art.
Your artistic compass is what determines the kind of marble that gets your attention. Your artistic compass determines how you go about chiseling that marble.

Radical Art Hits You In The Face
I got into the arts as a hobbyist. And technically speaking, that’s where I remain. Although for me, I view it as my part time career. Which I’ve had to take time off from to launch this business. I had no artistic compass.
I’ve been around the art scene, initially film and then improv, for about 10 years. And for me, the marble that calls to me, the whispers that I hear, tend to be off the beaten path. A clue as to where my artistic compass might be.
Finding my artistic compass has been a very human journey about moments and connection, beating the odds. That is the message I care about delivering through my art. My artistic compass started to pull me in that direction.
Pushing The Edge Of Creative Possibility: My Artistic Compass
I had something to say to the world. I still have a lot to say to the world. But there I was in the middle of the desert with a hunk of marble. Why had my artistic compass brought me to this place? And then the work begins.
The big takeaway is this, that is how artists think. Now, how they manifest that is in a million different ways. But this idea of there’s something out there and I need to give it life. Whatever that looks like for that artist’s medium and their process, it is born from their artistic compass.
That’s my gig as a coach. I try to help people find their marble.
“I don’t dream at night, I dream at day, I dream all day; I’m dreaming for a living.” Steven Spielberg.
Here’s why I’m sharing all this with you today. Incredible things can happen when you go off the beaten path. It’s the best possible way to find your artistic compass. You need to be able to get away from popularity, get away from the comfort of the nest, in order to blaze the trails that feed you.
And finally, there’s a lot of value to having something to say. One of my podcasts talks about that. I’m a teacher. I’m a consultant. I’m a life and business coach, and a trainer. I’m a rogue, a director and producer. My artistic compass fuels all of these thing. And my artistic compass anchors all of these things. If I listen. If I listen to my artistic compass.
When I find people that feel fully alive, they may or may not be successful or peak performers, but they’re content, they’re happy, they’re fulfilled. They’re not gonna get to those last moments of life and have many regrets.
