Uncertainty & Innovation (Summary Notes)
Maestros of any profession obsess on the doors that have never been opened. Really think about that and what that might mean to you. To your life. To your business if you have one or your non-profit if you have one, or your career. Uncertainty feeds innovators and disruptors.
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors because we’re curious. And curiosity keeps leading us down new paths” — Walt Disney.
Maestros of any profession, they see the world through a different pair of glasses. And those glasses create uncertainty. Innovation and uncertainty, that combo, they always dance together. And innovators keep the glasses on, the glasses that see the world differently. Innovation craves uncertainty.
And then new doors start appearing. Uncertainty becomes less overwhelming. Innovation, less scary.
“You’re entirely bonkers, but I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are” —-Alice in Wonderland.
Maestros are always looking for the magical box in their given field. They wanna open it up, they wanna see where it might lead them. Where it might take them as a chef, as a director, as a business owner, whatever the case might be.
Uncertainty and innovation is about finding the magical boxes.
The first printed books as we know books today, uncertainty and innovation at work. The first motion picture camera, uncertainty and innovation at work. The first automobile, video game, space ship- uncertainty and innovation at work.
What about 20 years from now? Will we be able to smell and sense and taste on a virtual level? We’ve come a long ways from the first printing press and wooden box.
“To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” —Thomas Edison.

Uncertainty & Beating The Odds
I just talked about from learning how to take risks, from learning that it’s okay to drown. It’s okay to drown and learn. Above all, that when well-meaning people say, “Never do that again. I don’t like watching you drown.” And You tell them, “Sorry,” give them a hug and dive back in. Everyone can benefit from that. And it can transform every aspect of your life.
This is what uncertainty and innovation looks like. Uncertainty and innovation is not the gentle path. And yet, it is the path that offer great rewards.
I’ve had amazingly successful business models. And I’ve had not so amazing ones. Same with the arts. Same with life. Thus is then endless adventure of uncertainty and innovation.
And all happened in the deep end. All of it, every single bit of it. And I have drowned more times than I could ever express. And I have had well-meaning friends and relatives tell me, “stop putting yourself through this pain”. Uncertainty and innovation can be very painful, and that’s ok.
How Are You Getting In The Way?
When you possess something it can only become as good as your resources and talents. I am in charge of this theatre. I am in charge of this movie or I am in charge of this business. I am in charge of my food as a chef, or I am in charge of being an auto mechanic. And I possess it. I own it.
If you possess something, it’s limited by you. The magical forces of uncertainty and innovation will fall silent under your steely grip.
Building is always about ego, it’s always about us, it’s always about you. But feeding something, that is about legacy. Feeding something is about uncertainty and innovation. How so? Because you have no clue what it might grow into.
“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one will go.” —-TS Elliot.
And one of my favorites:
“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” —–Samuel Beckett.
